Understanding Burn Severity

What Is a “Minor” Burn?

Burns are classified by how deeply they penetrate and damage the skin layers. At No Insurance Clinic HTX, we specialize in treating First-Degree and Superficial Second-Degree burns effectively.

Even a “minor” burn can lead to major complications if not cleaned and dressed properly. The skin is your body’s first line of defense; when it’s damaged, you are at risk for serious infections like cellulitis or staph.

Improperly treating a burn at home (using ice, butter, or dirty bandages) can deepen the injury and increase scarring.

Burn Severity Guide

Assessing Your Injury: Types of Burns

Accidents happen, and proper treatment begins with correctly identifying the severity of the injury. Understanding the difference is key to knowing when to walk in and when to rush to the ER.

First-Degree Burns (Superficial)

These are the most common and mildest types of burns. They only affect the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin).

  • Appearance: The skin is red, dry, and has no blisters. If you press on the red area, it briefly turns white (blanches) before turning red again.
  • Sensation: Moderate pain and sensitivity to touch.
  • Common Causes: Mild sunburn, a quick splash of hot water, or briefly touching a hot styling tool.
  • Healing Time: Usually heals within 3 to 6 days with peeling but no scarring.

Second-Degree Burns (Partial Thickness)

These burns are more serious because they penetrate through to the dermis (the second layer of skin). Because the protective barrier is compromised, these require proper medical care to prevent infection.

  • Appearance: The skin is deep red or splotchy and often looks wet or shiny. The defining characteristic is the formation of blisters (fluid-filled bumps).
  • Sensation: These can be intensely painful because the nerves are exposed but not destroyed.
  • Common Causes: Scalding from boiling water, severe sunburns with bubbling skin, or contact with hot oil.
  • Healing Time: Can take 2 to 3 weeks to heal. Without proper cleaning and dressing, these are at high risk for infection.

Third-Degree & Beyond

We do not treat major burns. If your burn fits the description below, please proceed directly to an Emergency Room.

  • Third-Degree Burns: The damage reaches the fat layer beneath the skin. The skin may look waxy white, charred black, or leathery brown.
  • The Warning Sign: Surprisingly, these burns may be painless or numb because the nerve endings have been completely destroyed.

Note: Even a “minor” Second-Degree burn can be dangerous if it covers a large area of the body (larger than the size of your palm) or is located on the face, hands, feet, or groin. If you are unsure of the severity, it is always safer to get a professional evaluation.

The Path to Better Health: Diagnosis and Beyond

Treatment Options

Treatment doesn’t stop when you leave the clinic. We provide a comprehensive plan to ensure you heal without complications.

Medication Management

Our staff will take multiple measurements to determine if your pressure is consistently high.

  • Topical Antibiotics: Prescription-strength creams to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Pain Management: Recommendations for over-the-counter or prescription pain relief to help you sleep and function.

Wound Care Supplies

We can provide or recommend specific non-adherent pads, gauze, and tape to keep your burn safe from dirt and friction.

Follow-Up Care

For deeper minor burns, we may schedule a follow-up visit to inspect the wound, ensure no infection has set in, and change the dressing in a sterile environment.

Kitchen Mishaps & Chemical Splashes

Common Causes of Minor Burns

Burns happen in an instant—a slip in the kitchen, a splash of chemicals, or a moment of distraction. At No Insurance Clinic HTX, we see a wide variety of burn injuries caused by everyday activities. We frequently treat:

This is the most common category we treat. It involves damage caused by external heat sources raising the temperature of the skin and tissues.

  • Hot liquids or steam (scalds) from cooking.
  • Touching hot metal, glass, or plastic (stoves, irons).
  • Fire or open flames.

Unlike heat burns, these occur when strong acids or alkalis touch the skin. These are “silent” burns that can continue to damage the tissue even after the initial contact.

  • Household cleaners (bleach, ammonia).
  • Pool chemicals.
  • Workplace solvents.

These are a hybrid injury—part abrasion (scrape) and part heat burn caused by the friction of skin rubbing rapidly against a surface.

  • Road Rash
  • Treadmill & Gym Injuries
  • Carpet/Turf Burns

While most sunburns can be treated at home, severe cases (“sun poisoning”) require medical intervention.

  • Blistering
  • Dehydration Risk

Our Process

Our Wound Care Process

At No Insurance Clinic HTX, our process is gentle, sterile, and focused on your comfort.

Assessment & Vitals

We check your blood pressure and heart rate to ensure your body isn’t in shock. We assess the depth and size of the burn to confirm it is safe to treat in our clinic.

Step
1

Cleaning & Debridement

Infection is the biggest risk. We gently clean the wound with sterile saline solution to remove debris, dead skin, or chemicals. If necessary, we safely drain large blisters or remove loose tissue (debridement) to promote healing.

Step
2

Tetanus Prevention

Burns are a common entry point for Tetanus bacteria. We review your vaccination history and provide a Tetanus booster if yours is out of date.

Step
3

Specialized Dressing

We apply antibiotic ointments (like Silver Sulfadiazine) and non-stick sterile dressings that keep the wound moist and protected without adhering to the raw skin.

Step
4

Aftercare Instructions

We teach you exactly how to change your bandages at home and what signs of infection to watch for.

5

Understanding Your Risk and Taking Control

When to Go to the ER vs. Visit Our Clinic

Burns can be life-threatening. Knowing where to go can save your life or a limb.

  • Large Burns: The burn covers a large area (bigger than the palm of your hand).
  • Deep Burns (3rd/4th Degree): The skin looks charred, leathery, white, or brown, and there is no pain (indicating nerve damage).
  • Sensitive Areas: Burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, buttocks, or over major joints.
  • Electrical Burns: Caused by lightning or contact with electricity (internal damage may occur).
  • Inhalation: You breathed in smoke or hot air (coughing, trouble breathing).
  • Chemicals: Strong acids or industrial chemicals (flush immediately and go to ER).

Unlike heat burns, these occur when strong acids or alkalis touch the skin. These are “silent” burns that can continue to damage the tissue even after the initial contact.

  • The burn is superficial (redness or small blisters).
  • You need a Tetanus booster shot following the injury.
  • You are concerned about how an old burn is healing.
  • You need affordable wound care supplies and instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick, clear answers to common questions about our services, appointments, and care options.

No! Never put ice or very cold water directly on a burn. It can damage the tissue further. Use cool (room temperature) running water for 10-15 minutes immediately after the injury, then come see us.

Yes, burns break the skin barrier and allow bacteria to enter. If you haven’t had a tetanus shot in the last 5-10 years, we highly recommend getting a booster during your visit.

Generally, no. The blister acts as a natural sterile bandage. If it breaks, it increases the risk of infection. If a blister is large or painful, let our providers assess it—we can treat it safely in a sterile environment.

Yes! For acute injuries like burns, we welcome walk-ins. Come in as soon as possible after the injury occurs.

We offer affordable, flat-rate pricing for office visits. Procedures like wound cleaning or tetanus shots may have small additional fees, but we will always tell you the cost upfront.

We focus on prescribing generic medications that are widely available and affordable. We can also provide you with information on pharmacy discount programs (like GoodRx) or local Houston pharmacies that offer the lowest self-pay prices to ensure you can afford your treatment.
